Charting the Measures

The app "Japanese Traditional Time" helps to mark the time of the day within the year, for one's given location.

This timing method adjusts:

  • For the hour difference during daylight savings time.
  • For the number of minutes one is east or west of the midpoint of their timezone.

This arrives at local time. The midpoint of Zi / Rat can then be used to mark the fixed 2 hour windows.

However, this app does not use fixed 2 hour windows, but further adjusts for the ebb and flow of sunrise throughout the year by fixing the midpoint of Mao / Rabbit to the moment of sunrise. This is the timing that is used by the post-heaven trigrams in the LBBF:

  • The midpoint of Zi / Rat is the beginning of Kan.
  • The beginning of Yin / Tiger is the "Beginning of Spring" (in the day) and the beginning of Gen.
  • The midpoint of Mao / Rabbit is the beginning of Zhen.
  • The beginning of Si / Snake is the "Beginning of Summer" and the beginning of Xun.
  • The midpoint of Wu / Horse is the beginning of Li.
  • The beginning of Shen / Monkey is the "Beginning of Autumn" and the beginning of Kun.
  • The midpoint of Mao / Rooster is the beginning of Dui.
  • The beginning of Hai / Boar is the "Beginning of Winter" and the beginning of Qian.

In accord with the very first line of the Guodian Lao Zi / Dao De Jing:

绝智弃下又,民利百倍。

Pushing beyond thought abandons continuously sinking down,
and people benefit a hundred times over.

The mind must be empty - push beyond thinking. Especially on the exhale, so that the mind is not holding onto the stiffness its creates and that stiffness can sink.

When thinking the head inches ever forward. When stopping thinking, draw up on Bai Hui and draw back on Feng Fu - use these to stop and push beyond thought.

This prevents new stiff qi of thoughts from contaminating the organ qi. However one may still need to cleanse the organs and tissues of previous contamination. This is important to consider carefully.

The text speaks of sitting empty all day long. And not wasting our own vital qi. That is not easy for most of us. And when we do find the time, how much conditioning needs to be undone?

Inhaling the qi of nature, and exhaling it back into nature:

䷗䷒䷊䷡䷪䷀䷫䷠䷋䷓䷖䷁

Inhaling deeply, exhaling softly to retain the qi of nature:

䷗䷒䷊䷡䷪䷀䷪䷡䷊䷒䷗䷁

The meridian clock here is adjusted 15 degrees clockwise. So is the sovereign cycle of the hexagrams. This is to match principle.
